Parterre Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2019

Parterre Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2019

These wines offer far more complexity and interest and make better food wines than the usual stainless-steel tank-fermented Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blends. They take this blend wines to a higher plane usually reserved for fine barrel fermented Chardonnays and well worth hunting down.

At Fraser Gallop, we have used a few different formats of barrels from 500L puncheons, 265L cigar barrels and 284 L stainless steel barrels and the Bordeaux 225L Export barrel. The idea of spreading the Sauvignon Blanc lees in the barrel has merit as the thiol content of Sauvignon Blanc is high and more lees contact in the wine is beneficial.

Awards and Reviews

"From the cool ‘19 vintage, this wine presents salivating graphite and wet-slate characters both on the nose and palate, intermingled with white stone fruit, sweet green sugar snap pea and pink grapefruit. Co-fermented in a combination of older French oak barriques, puncheons and long skinny cigar barrels (these enable better extraction of the thiols from the sauvignon lees), this is a texturally rich yet restrained wine. A recent tasting of the 2013 Parterre shows its ageing potential"

Erin Larking for James Halliday, 95pts

"This is right at the top of the region’s offering once again with a complex, sophisticated delivery of fresh, lemon and lime aromas, as well as a gently flinty, stony edge. The palate is drenched in fresh, tart and tangy citrus fruit and delivers a succulent, tropical fruit-tinged finish. Drink over the next six years."

James Suckling, 94 Points

"Highly scented with floral fragrances, providing such an exotic opening. The influence of French oak fermentation and subsequent maturation is obvious, but also in harmony. So nothing excessive. The palate is pure joy. Intense, yes, and persistent, but with poise and balance right through. Lemony with fresh-cut hay nuances. Compelling."

Ray Jordan, 93 pts

"Very light straw hue and a nutty, oak-fermented bouquet, the oak rather shrill and minty-toothpaste-like. The lemony acid is very tangy and zesty, giving it vitality. It’s just a bit shrill and not very vinous. It certainly has some concentration. A little more time in the bottle will be an advantage."
