BY CAMPBELL MATTINSON
2009 Cabernet Sauvignon
It spends 12 months in oak and is made by Clive Otto. The 2008 edition was excellent and I’ve been looking forward to trying more of the 2009 reds from Margaret River – so I ripped the top off this shortly after it came in.
It’s a sturdy, almost muscular wine with chalky, sinewy tannin and a focus on line and length. By that I mean that it’s not a plump or particularly voluptuous wine; it tastes of gravel and blackcurrant and gumnuts but the tannin kicks early, pulling these flavour confidently/assertively through the finish.
Classic cabernet styling. Excellent persistence. It needs some time but it looks set for a very bright future.
